SSL Certificates

SSL certificates are digital certificates that encrypt the data that goes between your browser and the website you are viewing. This is particularly important to protect sensitive data like credit card transactions and personal details.

SSL certificates are only issued for 1 year at the time. Any multi year SSLs have to be renewed every year using the same validation process. This is why we just sell 1 year certificates.

SSL certificate Types

There are various types of SSL certificates. Read more about the types here.

These are SSL certificates that are issued almost instantly using domain validation. You will usually receive an email to a default email address e.g. postmaster@yourdomainname (it is a good idea to have this set up first) that will ask you to click a validation link to show that you own the domain. Once this is done the certificate is issued. These SSL certificates are often referred to as 'Instant SSL Certificates'.

Business Validation SSL Certificates or Organisation Validation (OV) SSL Certificates are SSL certificates that have more checks than the domain validated certificates and therefore give your visitors more confidence and trust in your website. These certificates validate the WHOIS information of the domain name and require additional documentation to verify your company's identity.

Buying an SSL Certificate - The Process

Before you start and to make the certificate authorisation process quicker it is recommended that you do the following:

• Make sure the correct contact information is on WHOIS for your domain name.
• Have the CSR generated on your web server for your domain name.
