DMARC stands for Domain-based Message Authentication Reporting and Conformance. It is a method, using a DNS TXT record, of authenticating email messages. When you create a DMARC record (referred to as a policy) it tells a receiving email server what to do with a email message after checking your domain's SPF (Sender Policy Framework) and DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) records.
An example record is "v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:dmarc@yourdomain.co.uk"
The v tag is the version of DMARC.
The p tag lets the receiving email server know what you want them to do with a message that fails authentication. There are 3 choices None, Quarantine or Reject.
The rua tag is the email address you would like the receiving email server to send DMARC aggregate reports to.
There are a total of 11 tags but these 3 will get you a working DMARC record. It is recommend to start with the p tag set to None. When you have checked the reports and happy that emails are getting through you can change the p tag to use Quarantine or Reject.
