No. You do not need to transfer your domain name to your hosting company.
Many hosting companies ask customers to transfer their domain when they purchase website hosting. While this can be convenient, it's completely optional.
In most cases, your domain can stay exactly where it is while your website is hosted somewhere else.
Your domain name, website hosting and email hosting are all separate services. They simply work together using DNS.
My hosting company said I need to transfer my domain to them, do I have to?
Usually, no.
If you're simply moving your website to a new hosting provider, you can normally leave your domain where it is and either:
- Update your nameservers, or
- Keep your DNS where it is and update the required DNS records (our recommended option).
Your visitors won't notice any difference.

What about an IPS TAG?
If you have a .uk domain, another company may ask you to change your IPS TAG.
An IPS TAG is simply the system used to transfer ownership of a .uk domain between registrars.
Changing your IPS TAG is only necessary if you actually want to transfer your domain registration to another company.
If you're only moving your website, you usually do not need to change your IPS TAG.
When would I transfer my domain?
You may choose to transfer your domain if you:
- Prefer all your services with one provider.
- Are unhappy with your current registrar.
- Want another company to manage your domain renewals.
Otherwise, there is usually no technical reason to move your domain.
It's a common misunderstanding...
