Domain names are human friendly names for websites without them we would have to remember 92.45.133.135 instead of nuttyabouthosting.co.uk!When you chose a domain name you should select one that says something about what you do or who you are and that people are likely to search for on the internet. If you sold sweets you would want a name like sweets.co.uk rather than devon.co.uk.

## Moving your emails to your Nutty About Hosting account
URL: https://www.nuttyabouthosting.co.uk/knowledgebase/article/moving-your-emails-to-your-Nutty-About-Hosting-account
Updated: 2026-09-22
This is a guide to moving your emails from your current provider to our email servers. Before you change your MX records in your DNS you need to do the following:
1. Log into your portal at https://www.nuttyabouthosting.co.uk/portal.
2. Click on your hosting plan to take you to your hosting control panel.
3. Set up your domain in the control panel. This is done by clicking on the 'Domains' option, under the System heading.
4. Set up your email accounts in the control panel with the same password that you currently have (unless you want to change it or it doesn't met our strong password criteria).
If you can have the same passwords then you may not have to update your email client. To do this follow this guide on how to add an email account.
5. Locate your email settings and update your email client. These are listed in your hosting summary.
This will provide you with your email server IP address, preferred hostnames to use for secure access and the domain alias i.e. mail.yourdomainname.co.uk
If you are already using mail.yourdomainname.co.uk you may not have to update your email client.
6. Optional. Find your current providers generic url for your current web mail. This will allow you to check if any emails are there as the DNS propagation happens.
Your PC could pick up the DNS changes before an email server sending an email to your domain does. One of our email servers webmail is, for example, https://webmail.nah.zone
7. Update your DNS MX records.
6. The changes can take upto 72hrs but are usually a lot quicker.

## Email Forwarding and Delivery Reliability
URL: https://www.nuttyabouthosting.co.uk/knowledgebase/article/how-do-i-setup-email-forwarding
Updated: 2026-07-27
Email Forwarding and Delivery ReliabilityEmail forwarding is supported on our email services. However, we recommend using it only where necessary, as forwarded messages can be less reliable than emails delivered directly to a mailbox.Modern email providers such as Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo use authentication checks including SPF, DKIM and DMARC to help identify spam and prevent sender spoofing. When a message is automatically forwarded, some of these checks may fail or no longer align correctly. This is because the forwarding server passes on a message that still claims to come from the original sender. As a result, forwarded messages may be:Marked as spam or junkRejected by the receiving providerDelayedSilently filtered or not deliveredThese issues are largely controlled by the receiving email provider and cannot always be resolved by the server performing the forwarding.Recommended approachFor the most reliable email delivery, we recommend:Accessing your mailbox directly through webmail or an email application using IMAPAdding the mailbox to each device on which you need to receive emailAsking contacts and online services to send directly to your preferred mailboxUsing forwarding only when direct mailbox access is not practicalDo not report forwarded messages as spamIf an unwanted message is forwarded to another provider, please do not mark the forwarded copy as spam. When a forwarded message is reported as spam, the receiving provider may associate the complaint with our forwarding server rather than the server that originally sent the spam. This can damage the reputation of our mail platform and affect delivery for other customers.Instead, we recommend deleting the message or reporting it within the original mailbox before it is forwarded.SPF, DKIM and DMARCDomains using email forwarding should have a valid DMARC policy configured.Where possible, DKIM should also be enabled for email sent from the domain. SPF, DKIM and DMARC work together to improve email authentication and help receiving providers determine whether a message is legitimate. These records cannot guarantee that forwarded email will always be delivered, but they provide important protection against spoofing and improve the general reputation of the domain. Please contact our support team if you need assistance checking your domain's email authentication records.

When you add a domain name in your hosting control panel you have the option to add an Instant alias. An Instant alias is a temporary domain issued by us and used to allow access to your web site or mailbox during DNS propagation. We use the domain name instantlink.co.uk as our alias i.e. http://demodomain.co.uk.instantlink.co.uk
If you create your instant alias and then browse to it straight away you may get an error. Although the DNS record creation is instant it can take a short while for the outside world to pick it up. You browser can then cache that result and it may appear that you then can't access the site. The solution to is to clear your DNS cache on your computer.
On windows you need to do the following.
1. Go to Start --> Run --> Type 'cmd'.
2. Right click on the result and select 'Run as Administrator'
3. Then type 'ipconfig /flushdns' and press return. You should get the result below.

## POP3 vs IMAP Which one to Choose?
URL: https://www.nuttyabouthosting.co.uk/knowledgebase/article/pop3-vs-imap-which-one-to-choose
Updated: 2026-07-26
We are often asked what are the differences between POP3 and IMAP email accounts and which one should be selected when setting up an email account. This guide explains the pros and cons of both email protocols.
The main difference between the two email protocols is that IMAP leaves a copy of the message on the email server and POP3 keeps it locally on your computer (although you can get it to leave it on the server too). This means that in todays world where you might have your PC and smartphone accessing your emails IMAP is the ideal solution.
IMAP
Ideal for people access emails on multiple devices or shared accounts where a number of people are accessing a generic account like info@yourdomainname. This is the slightly more modern protocol and we recommend that you use this type of email account. However you may run out of space on your email server and you may need to archive older messages if you run out of space - How to archive IMAP emails in Outlook 2016
POP3
There are two reasons for using POP3. Firstly if you have not got a large email quota with your account then not storing messages on the email server will mean you aren't constantly managing your emails. Secondly if you are not happy keeping your emails on a 3rd party email server then POP3 provides more privacy if you download them onto a device that you have control over.
Conculsion
So there you have it. IMAP is the preferred method giving you the best control. POP3 allows you to manage space and privacy more. We would recommend IMAP but you can go one step further and have your contacts and calendars syncing as well at your emails by using Micosoft Office 365 Exchange server.

## How to Create a SPF Record
URL: https://www.nuttyabouthosting.co.uk/knowledgebase/article/how-to-create-spf-record
Updated: 2026-07-27
Start KB Article
This article describes what an SPF record is, what it does, and how to add any additional 3rd party mail services IP addresses to your SPF record.
If you are have trouble following this guide or have any questions then please contact support.
SPF records are used to authenticate a mail services IP addresses to allow them to send emails on behalf of your domain name.
This is done to prevent unauthorised servers from sending emails out to recipients using your domain name for multiple malicious practices (phishing, baiting, and other social engineering strategies).
If you have purchased an email or hosting plan from us an SPF record will be created automatically for you with our email services information.
If you would like to add an IP address for a 3rd party mail service then please follow this guide on how to do so.
1. Log into your portal at https://www.nuttyabouthosting.co.uk/portal.
2. Click on your hosting plan to take you to your hosting control panel.
3. Click on the 'Domains' option, under the System heading.
4. Select the domain you would like to add an SPF record to.
5. Click "Edit DNS zone records".
6. Find and click the edit button (pencil icon) to edit the SPF record.
7. To authenticate an IP address from your mail service we need to edit this line of text,
v=spf1 – This means the version of the SPF protocol our domain is using.
a – This means we are allowing any A records within our domain records to send emails on behalf of the domain name
mx – This does the same job as “a” except this allows any MX records in our domain records to send emails on behalf of your domain name
-all – This defines how the unauthorised emails are handled.
If “-“ is in front of the “all” any unauthorised email sent will be rejected.
If “~” is used this means emails will be sent, but are marked as “failed to authenticate”.
If “+” is used this allows all sent emails to pass through using your domain name without any SPF authentication.
We highly suggest that you keep this option as “-all” to stop unauthorised users from impersonating your domain name.
All we need to change is between the “MX” and –“all” we need to enter our IP address using the tag “ip4:” as such,
v=spf1 a mx ip4:192.168.1.0 -all
If the address given is an ipv6 address we would use the tag “ip6:” which will look like this:
v=spf1 a mx ip6:134a:61ee:08eb:42c2:97ba:854b:8f5c:6dfc -all
If you need to allow an entire domain to send emails on your domains behalf you would use “include:”,
v=spf1 a mx include:nuttyabouthosting.co.uk -all
Once you have formatted your SPF record with the address you would like to authenticate press the “Save” button.
8. You should now see the record has been updated with the new authenticated address.

DMARC stands for Domain-based Message Authentication Reporting and Conformance. It is a method, using a DNS TXT record, of authenticating email messages. When you create a DMARC record (referred to as a policy) it tells a receiving email server what to do with a email message after checking your domain's SPF (Sender Policy Framework) and DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) records.
An example record is "v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:dmarc@yourdomain.co.uk"
The v tag is the version of DMARC.
The p tag lets the receiving email server know what you want them to do with a message that fails authentication. There are 3 choices None, Quarantine or Reject.
The rua tag is the email address you would like the receiving email server to send DMARC aggregate reports to.
There are a total of 11 tags but these 3 will get you a working DMARC record. It is recommend to start with the p tag set to None. When you have checked the reports and happy that emails are getting through you can change the p tag to use Quarantine or Reject.
This article shows you how to add a DMARC record to your domain DNS.

## Does your hosting work with a Mac?
URL: https://www.nuttyabouthosting.co.uk/knowledgebase/article/does-hosting-work-with-a-mac
Updated: 2026-07-26
Yes - completely. This is one of the most common questions we're asked, so here's the full answer.
"Windows hosting" describes our servers, not your computer
When a hosting company talks about Windows hosting or Linux hosting, it's describing the operating system running on the server in the datacentre - the machine your website lives on. It says nothing at all about the computer you use.
Your website's visitors don't need any particular computer either. A website hosted on a Windows server displays identically in Safari on a Mac, Chrome on a PC, or the browser on any phone or tablet.
Everything is managed in your web browser
Your hosting control panel, webmail, domain settings, SSL certificates and billing all run in an ordinary web page. If your Mac can open Safari, you can manage everything we sell. The same goes for an iPad, a Chromebook or a phone. There is nothing to install and no Windows software involved at any point.
Email works with Apple Mail and iPhone
Our mailboxes use standard IMAP and POP3, so they set up in Apple Mail on your Mac - and in Mail on iPhone and iPad - in a couple of minutes. There's webmail too, for when you're away from your own devices.
Building or updating your site from a Mac
If you work on your website yourself, everything you'd expect works from macOS:
WordPress, Umbraco and other CMS dashboards run in the browser.
FTP and SFTP clients such as Transmit, Cyberduck and FileZilla upload files to our servers.
Developers can use Git, VS Code and other cross-platform tools as normal.
So how do I choose between Windows and Linux hosting?
By what your website is built with - never by the computer you own:
WordPress or WooCommerce - choose WordPress hosting.
A PHP site (Laravel, Joomla, Drupal, custom PHP) - choose Linux hosting.
.NET, ASP.NET or MS SQL - choose Windows hosting.
Not sure what your site is built with? Our hosting chooser walks you through it, or send us your website address and we'll tell you.

## Do I have to host my domain name with the same company I registered it with?
URL: https://www.nuttyabouthosting.co.uk/knowledgebase/article/do-i-have-to-host-my-domain-name-with-the-same-company-i-registered-it-with
Updated: 2026-09-01
No. Your domain name and your website hosting do not have to be with the same company.
Many people assume that because they registered their domain with one company, they also have to host their website there. Fortunately, that's not the case.
Your domain name, website hosting and email hosting are all separate services that work together using DNS (Domain Name System).
Understanding how it all works
The easiest way to think about it is like this:
Your domain name is simply your address on the internet.
Your website hosting stores your website files.
Your email hosting stores your mailboxes and emails.
Your DNS records connect them all together.
There are two ways to connect your website
Option 1 – Change your nameservers
Your new hosting provider may ask you to change your domain's nameservers to theirs.
This transfers control of your DNS to that provider, meaning they will manage all of your DNS records, including your website and email settings.
This works perfectly well, but it also means you'll need to contact them whenever you want to make DNS changes.
Option 2 – Keep your DNS with Nutty About Hosting (Recommended)
In most cases, this is the better option.
Instead of changing your nameservers, we simply update the individual DNS records needed to point your website to its new hosting provider.
This means you can host your website anywhere while still benefiting from having your DNS managed by us.
Benefits of keeping your DNS with us
✅ Your website can be hosted with any provider.
✅ Your email can stay exactly where it is.
✅ You continue to benefit from our competitive domain renewal prices.
✅ We can continue to help manage your DNS settings.
✅ Future website moves are usually much easier.
✅ There's less risk of accidentally disrupting your email when making changes.
✅ If you ever need support, we can often diagnose and resolve DNS issues much more quickly because we have direct control over the DNS.
Most importantly, we give you full control over your DNS records through our control panel. If that sounds a little daunting, don't worry—just get in touch and we'll happily make the changes for you.
Which option should I choose?
For most customers, we recommend keeping your DNS with Nutty About Hosting and simply updating the required DNS records.
This gives you the flexibility to use any website hosting provider while allowing us to continue supporting your domain and DNS whenever you need help.
Of course, if you would prefer to move your DNS elsewhere, that's absolutely fine too. We're happy to help either way.
It's not true...
❌ Myth: I have to host my website with the company I registered my domain with.
✅ Fact: Your domain registration, website hosting and email hosting are completely separate services. They can all be provided by different companies, with DNS connecting everything together.
Need help?
If you're moving your website or changing hosting providers and you're not sure which option is best, just get in touch with our support team.
We'll happily make any changes for you if required.

## Do I need to transfer my domain to my hosting company?
URL: https://www.nuttyabouthosting.co.uk/knowledgebase/article/articledo-i-need-to-transfer-my-domain-to-my-hosting-company
Updated: 2026-10-12
No. You do not need to transfer your domain name to your hosting company.
Many hosting companies ask customers to transfer their domain when they purchase website hosting. While this can be convenient, it's completely optional.
In most cases, your domain can stay exactly where it is while your website is hosted somewhere else.
Your domain name, website hosting and email hosting are all separate services. They simply work together using DNS.
My hosting company said I need to transfer my domain to them, do I have to?
Usually, no.
If you're simply moving your website to a new hosting provider, you can normally leave your domain where it is and either:
Update your nameservers, or
Keep your DNS where it is and update the required DNS records (our recommended option).
Your visitors won't notice any difference.
Why keep your domain with Nutty About Hosting?
✅ Continue benefiting from our competitive domain renewal prices.
✅ Keep full control of your domain in one place.
✅ We can continue helping with DNS changes whenever you need us.
✅ You can move your website between hosting companies without transferring your domain each time.
✅ If there's ever a DNS issue, we're able to investigate much more quickly because we manage your DNS.
✅ You remain free to choose any hosting company you like.
What about an IPS TAG?
If you have a .uk domain, another company may ask you to change your IPS TAG.
An IPS TAG is simply the system used to transfer ownership of a .uk domain between registrars.
Changing your IPS TAG is only necessary if you actually want to transfer your domain registration to another company.
If you're only moving your website, you usually do not need to change your IPS TAG.
When would I transfer my domain?
You may choose to transfer your domain if you:
Prefer all your services with one provider.
Are unhappy with your current registrar.
Want another company to manage your domain renewals.
Otherwise, there is usually no technical reason to move your domain.
It's a common misunderstanding...
❌ Myth: I have to transfer my domain to my new hosting company.
✅ Fact: In most cases, you can keep your domain exactly where it is and simply point it to your new hosting.

If you're unsure whether you need to transfer your domain or simply update your DNS, get in touch.

## I've let my domain expire, but now I've changed my mind and want to renew it again. Can I?
URL: https://www.nuttyabouthosting.co.uk/knowledgebase/article/my-domain-expired-but-now-ive-changed-my-mind
Updated: 2026-09-01
Don't panic. In most cases, you can still renew your domain even after it has expired.
When a domain expires, it isn't normally deleted straight away. Instead, it enters a grace period, giving you time to renew it before it becomes available for someone else to register.
The easiest way to check is by logging into your customer portal.
How do I renew an expired domain?
Renewing an expired domain only takes a few moments.
Log in to your customer portal.
Locate your expired domain.
Tick the checkbox next to the domain name.
Click Renew Selected Domain.
Complete the checkout process.
Once payment has been received, your domain will normally be renewed automatically.
Good news!
✅ Most expired domains can still be renewed without losing your website or email.
✅ Your website and email should begin working again once the renewal has completed and the domain becomes active.
✅ The renewal process usually only takes a few minutes once payment has been processed.
⚠️ The sooner you renew your domain, the better. Waiting too long could mean the domain leaves its renewal grace period and becomes available for someone else to register.
Is there a deadline?
Yes.
Domains can only be renewed for a limited period after they expire.
If too much time has passed, the domain may leave the renewal grace period and become available for someone else to register.
For that reason, we always recommend renewing your domain as soon as possible if you decide you want to keep it.
What if my website or email has stopped working?
It's normal for your website and email to stop working once a domain has expired.
After renewing the domain, these services should begin working again automatically once the renewal has completed. In some cases, it may take a short while for the change to update across the internet.
It's a common misunderstanding...
❌ Myth: Once my domain has expired, it's gone forever.
✅ Fact: Most domains can still be renewed for a limited time after they expire, so don't panic — just renew yours as soon as possible.
Need help?
If you're unable to renew your domain through the customer portal, or you're unsure whether it is still available for renewal, get in touch with our support team.
We'll happily check the status of your domain and advise you on the next steps.
